Breakout Detroit Schedule

The program will range from intimate small group discussions with your captain and team (10 - 15 people) to 20- 50-person fireside chats to concerts and innovative dining experiences numbering into the hundreds with your peers and some of our favorite local Detroiters.

Kick-Off Begins
Our kick-off begins downtown and ends at Woodward Throwbacks.
For those who want a later night, we’ve got a busy few days ahead of us, but each hotel has bespoke bars and rooftops for those who want to keep the night going in conversation.
[6:00 PM - 7:00 PM] Detroit Kick-off @ SKALAR: Reflections of Light & Sound @ 1001 Woodward Avenue
Library Street Collective and Bedrock Detroit are excited to announce their collaboration with light artist Christopher Bauder and musician Kangding Ray, to bring a kinetic art installation to Detroit.
[7:30 PM - 9:30 PM] Breakout Dinner w/ Woodward Throwbacks @ Throwbacks Warehouse HQ (11500 Joseph Campau Ave, Hamtramck, MI)
Jumping on buses, we are heading north to Detroit sustainable furniture designers Bo Shepherd & Kyle Dubay of Woodward Throwbacks Hamtramck warehouse for all their collectibles and furniture for a one-of-a-kind dinner by Chefs Amber Beckham & Jermond Booze of Vinyl Tastings.

Off we go to check out the historic Michigan Central Station and Core City neighborhood!
[10:00 AM - 11:00 AM] Tour of Michigan Central Station (2001 15th Street)
Michigan Central Station was originally built in 1913 and operated until 1988. A looming structure of Detroit’s decline with its proximity to the Ambassador Bridge connecting to Canada, it’s set to re-open to the world on June 6th, brought back to glory by Ford Motor Company.
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to take private tours of the station, in partnership with NewLab, now re-imagined as a destination for advancing technologies and programs that address some of humanity's most pressing challenges.
[11:30 AM - 2:00 PM] Small Groups, Lunch, & Tour of Core City (4848 Grand River Ave)
We will be headed to the Core City neighborhood, specifically the development spearheaded by Prince Concepts founder Philip Kafka. This evolving urban landscape features creative mixed-use concepts, adapted reuse projects, green space, an emphasis on social interaction, and design.
Lunch will be prepared by the James Beard award-winning Chef Javier Baudauil & team behind the restaurant Barda via their new concept Puma.

Option 1: (5800 Cass Ave) Interactive Tour with the Carhartt Workshop and ISAIC, the Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center, which has a mission of putting people trained in advanced and emerging manufacturing technologies at the forefront of sustainable soft goods production.
Option 2: (630 Woodward) Led by Jake Chidester (Senior Director of urban development and innovation): Take a downtown real estate tour through the Bedrock real estate footprint of 100 properties and 20 million square feet of commercial and residential development in the heart of downtown Detroit. Recently named by Fast Company as one of the world’s most innovative urban development and real estate companies, the team will take you through mixed-use developments, starting with adaptive reuse of historic buildings, skyline-changing ground-up development, rotating public alleyway art galleries, and talk about the public, private partnership collaboration that it took to accomplish these city-shaping projects.
Option 3: (200 Walker Street) Tour the only HBCU-designated school in Michigan, Pensole Lewis College. PLC provides a unique educational experience that teaches students the skills they need to thrive in the product creation industry.
Option 4: (1520 Woodward Ave) Welcome remarks on Detroit Innovation @Urban Tech Xchange (UTX) featuring Kevin Mull (UTX), Tim Slusser (Chief of Mobility Innovation, City of Detroit), Lindsey Kilbride (DVP), and TBD co-founder from Black Tech Saturdays.
Following our opening conversation, you’ll break into smaller groups with local start-up founders including Michael Healander (Co-Founder & CEO, Airspacelink) & Justin Turk (Co-founder & CEO, Livegistics).
Option 5: (5200 Woodward — enter on John R) Take a tour through the iconic Detroit Insitute of Arts Museum including the featured work of artist Tiff Massey, the first Black woman to graduate from Cranbrook Academy of Art in metalsmithing AND the first native Detroit Black woman & youngest artist to solo exhibit at the DIA.

[4:30 PM - 5:30 PM] Hotel time & Get Ready for the Night.
Head back to the hotel and get changed quickly as we are off on our next adventure!

[6:00 PM - 7:00 PM] Evening kick-off at the “Motown Mansion.” (918 W Boston Blvd)
Join us for drinks and vibes at the former residence of Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, which, at their heights, included legends such as Diana Ross and the Supremes.
[7:30 PM - 10:00 PM] Dinner in Eastern Market @ Midnight Temple (2466 Riopelle) w/other Detroit food friends.

After hours [10:00 PM- on]: Head home to the hotel to rest, explore the eastern market after dark, or head to Lincoln Street Factory (1331 Holden St) for a Detroit house music evening.

[9:00 AM - 11:00 AM] City Exploration Part II
Option 1: (8295 Oakland Ave) Cold plunge & sauna @ The Schvitz. A 100-year-old bathhouse made popular in the 20's by the infamous Purple Gang.
Option 2: (24 Avalon Street, Highland Park, MI) Tour with CNN hero Mama Shu and the "Blight to Beauty" Avalon Village Tour, a nonprofit that owns 45 lots of land across three blocks to revitalize the neighborhood and create a safe and nurturing space for the entire community.
Option 3: (8034 W Warren Ave) Bike Tour with Leona Medley, Executive Director of the pioneering Joe Louis Greenway with ED Leona Medley, a 27.5-mile recreational pathway under construction that will unify Detroit’s neighborhoods and parks in partnership with Mogo, the regional bike-sharing network.
Option 4 (2934 Russell St): Take a behind-the-scenes Eastern Market tour with President Dan Carmody during the week's busiest day in one of the country's oldest food markets.

Lunch at The Shepard
[11:30 AM—1:30 PM] Lunch & Tour @ The Shepherd (1265 Parkview St) with the OG
We will be joining our friends from the magazine The OG, a quarterly art book that celebrates the work of cultural game changers and emerging creatives worldwide, for their Detroit launch at Library Street Collective’s east side development, the Shepherd. We will have a free-flowing lunch, small groups, and time to explore the development and its featured art.

[2:00 PM - 4:00 PM] City Exploration Part III
Option 1: (11527 Jos Campau) We are starting at Porcelinen for a ceramics workshop. Then, from there, we will explore the most diverse city in Michigan: Hamtramck, nestled inside the city border of Detroit.
Option 2: (461 Piquette Ave) Take a tour of the historic Ford Piquette Plant Museum, the former home of the Model T, to learn more about the first start-up pioneers who made the city the global name it became known for.
Option 3: (3583 Dubois Street) Explore artist Anders Ruhwald’s Unit 1 art installation on Detroit’s east side, followed by exploring the Heidelberg Project & Spotlite.
Option 4: Summer Sessions @ El Club (4114 Vernor Hwy) in Southwest Detroit. This is a local favorite by night but will kick back in the afternoon with some musical vibes to keep you company, take a breather, and spend more time with fellow breakers.
You’ll also be in the middle of the commercial corridor of Southwest Detroit, across the street from Clark Park, and a few blocks from the Mexicantown neighborhood to further explore.
